Student Research
Our program offers research opportunities throughout the medical school years:
Summer Research Projects: Projects take place in the summer between the first and second year of medical school. Application to our program's placements and stipends is competitive.
The Summer Research Projects provide 10 weeks of global and population health immersion experiences and research projects for students across all four schools of Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). Students are matched with CUIMC mentors and their partner organizations to complete research projects, while experiencing the language and culture of their host country first hand, when abroad.
Students are supported through preparatory research methods courses, pre-departure orientation, in-field support, and a post-return Symposium.
Summer Research Project locations change from year to year. Past sites include organizations in Armenia, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Japan, Kenya, Lesotho, Mexico, Nepal, South Africa, Switzerland, Peru, Taiwan, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and Uganda.
During the Fall, First-years attend our Global Pop's project Student-Mentor Matchmaking session to get more information about the following summer.
Scholarly Projects: Global and Population Health is one of six available tracks for Scholarly Projects during the 4th year of medical school. Students explore an area of medical practice or research with the aim of creating new knowledge. Projects span over 4 to 8 months. Competitive financing sourcesare available.
Research Year (pursuant towards the MD-MS in Biomedical Sciences): Students interested in pursuing a dual-degree in Biomedical Sciences with a Global Health focus may apply for competitive funding for a full research year.
