Abstract
The project aims to understand the reasons why patients with SLE do or do not take medications as prescribed, particularly on whether the use of alternative treatment modalities altered adherence.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder that predominantly affects women of Black, Hispanic, and Asian descent. SLE mortality can be reduced with treatment adherence: studies among SLE patients show high rates of nonadherence to medications. This research conducts qualitative surveys to understand SLE patient adherence to medications. This is a qualitative study that consists of conducting 30-45 minute in-depth interviews with 8 female patients ages 18-65 who have been diagnosed with SLE and are referred for the study by Farrell Family Health Clinic physicians. Interviews are being conducted via a Zoom video conference or phone call and audio recorded. Content analysis methods will be used.
