About Projects with Dr. Brust
Project Title: Optimizing treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis and HIV in South Africa
Project Information: With funding from NIH, we are examining the emergence of resistance to bedaquiline or clofazimine in patients who interrupt therapy for MDR or XDR tuberculosis. We are enrolling participants in South Africa from 5 different provinces, measuring plasma drug concentrations and sequencing sputum M. tuberculosis isolates to study correlations between drug pharmacokinetics and the emergence of resistance-conferring mutations.
Student Participation: Remote, Hybrid, and In-person opportunities
Travel Location(s): Cape Town, South Africa
Number of students: 1-2
Mentored Research Project in 2023
